Bashir wins new 5-year term

KHARTOUM, April 27 (KUNA) -- Sudanese National Electoral Commission (NEC) announced officially on Monday that incumbent President Omar Al-Bashir won the presidential elections for a new five-year term collecting 94.5 percent of the votes.
In a press conference on Monday, head of the NEC Mukhtar Al-Assam said that about 13.1 million Sudanese were eligible to vote in the polls, adding the turnout of the vote reached 46.4 percent.
Al-Bashir won about 5.3 million votes, while Federal Truth Party's Fadl Shoaib won only 1.4 percent of the vote, Al-Assam added.
Fatima Abdul Mahmoud, of the Sudanese Socialist Democratic Union, came third with 47,653 votes, around 0.85 percent, he said, adding that Al-Bashir's National Congress Party (NCP) also dominated most seats of the national parliament.
Some opposition parties in the country had boycotted the elections.
Al-Bashir, who has been in office since 1989, is set to take the constitutional oath before the parliament on June 2. (end) hha.hm
