Two ships with 475 Yemen evacuees reach Cochin port in S. India

NEW DELHI, April 18 (KUNA) -- The Indian Navy announced on Saturday that 475 people reached the port city of Cochin in the South Indian State of Kerala on board two passenger ships from Djibouti after evacuated from Yemen.
Announcing the news, an Indian Navy spokesman said: "MV Kavaratti and MV Corals with 475 people reached Cochin to a rousing welcome by Naval and Cochin Port Trust officials in presence of Naval band." With the arrival of these two ships, which set sail on April 12 from Djibouti, the heavy evacuation mission of India comes to an end.
Official sources said that the last batch of evacuees include 337 Bangladeshi nationals and 65 Indian origin Yemenis.
Meanwhile, Bangladeshi officials have already arrived in Kochi to facilitate the onward transfer of its nationals while officials from the Kerala government were not clear about the fate of Indian origin Yemenis.
The Indian External Affairs Ministry had announced one week back that its evacuation mission carried out by the Naval and Air forces in coordination with other civilian sectors came to an end with the arrival of 670 evacuees.
An earlier announcement from the External Affairs Ministry had revealed that the total number of Indians evacuated from Yemen stood at 4640 in addition to 960 foreigners. (end) atk.mt
