"Accountability will happen in Syria" -- US

NEW YORK, April 18 (KUNA) -- It is true that the Security Council failed to secure an International Criminal Court (ICC) referral of the crimes in Syria, but "accountability will happen in Syria," said US Permanent Representative to the UN Samantha Power.
The members of the Council heard testimonies at an informal "Arria-Formula" meeting, where a presentation by individuals to the latest chemical weapons attacks in March took place.
Powers said, during the session held late on Friday, that what they heard was horrific first-hand stories of a family wiped out by a chaemical weapon attack in Sarmin, where patients were choking, vomiting and they bore all of the tell-tale signs of chemical weapons use.
Speaking about accountability, individuals who are responsible for attacks like that will be held accountable, and the documentary record is being built, the testimonies are being gathered and the long arm of justice is taking more time, but this documentary record will be used at some point in a court of law and the perpetrators of these crimes need to bear that in mind, Powers added.
The documentary was presented by Dr. Mohammed Tennari, a Syrian Arab Red Crescent member and affiliated physician in the town of Sarmin, who dealt with the chlorine attack, and Dr Zaher Sahlooul, President of the Syrian American Medical Society (SAMS), whose organization supports hospitals that received chemical weapons attack victims.(end) mao.rk
