Kuwait Monodrama festival kicks off

KUWAIT, April 11 (KUNA) -- The National Council for Culture, Arts and Letters (NCCAL) inaugurated on Saturday the second session of Kuwait Monodrama Festival at Dasma theater, which lasts until next Friday.
The festival showcases local and Arab "Monodrama" performances. Monodrama is a form of experimental theater that has evolved during the past 20th century, with a solo performer story teller who lists events of the story through dialogue.
The opening show was titled (yesterday's story) and was presented by Kuwaiti actor Abdulaziz Al-Haddad.
Minister of Information and Minister of State for Youth Affairs Sheikh Salman Sabah Salem Al-Sabah said, in a speech in the opening ceremony, that the festival is an artistic and technical demonstration with a Kuwaiti initiative to show interest in theater, as in this case the one man show theater, an upscale and outstanding drama, which highlights creativity and freedom.
The minister added that the country's political leadership firmly believes in the importance of art and theater and all their forms, including events such as these that cover and support meaningful art institutions and cultural initiatives.
Sheikh Salman added that NCCAL prepared a strategy to modernize and set up theaters in all provinces of the country due to its rich and creative nature and being the basic pillar for development of thought and culture in life.
The minister called for Kuwaiti youth working in the drama field to take advantage of the festival and refine their talent and creativity to serve Kuwait.
Earlier, Sheikh Salman mourned the loss of Kuwaiti legendary actor Ahmad Al-Saleh.
Sheikh Salman told KUNA in a statement that Ahmad Al-Saleh, throughout his career, was an example for the true great artist with outstanding talent.
After the ceremony on the festival, Sheikh Salman told reporters that Kuwait will establish a higher committee to organize theater work in the country and will provide all the necessary requirements to initiate work on a large for theater.
The minister noted that attendance by many Arab and Kuwaiti theater pioneers to the opening ceremony will enrich the festival experience through benefiting from their experiences and talents. (end) has.mb
