GCC: Kerry reiterates US commitment to Gulf security

RIYADH, April 5 (KUNA) -- US Secretary of State John Kerry had reaffirmed US commitment to Gulf and regional security during a phone call with GCC foreign ministers on Friday in light of a recent P5+1-Iran nuclear deal, the GCC said.
During the phone conversation, Kerry had stressed US interest in the promotion and intensification of consultation and coordination with the GCC member states on the latest developments of P5+1-Iran nuclear talks, the GCC Secretariat-General said in a new statement here on Sunday.
He had emphasized that any agreement with Iran would prevent it from getting nuclear weapons, cut its research activities in this regard, and put it under a mechanism of strict and unprecedented inspection, the GCC added.
On their part, the GCC foreign ministers had appreciated such US reassurances and welcomed a recent invitation by US President Barack Obama for a summit meeting in Camp David with a view to promoting consultation and coordination between Washington and the GCC member states in face of regional challenges, according to the statement.
Iran and the six world powers agreed on a framework deal aimed at curbing Tehran's controversial nuclear program, ending up marathon talks in the Swiss city of Lausanne. (end) yms.mt
