1,234 Iraqis killed by violence, terrorism in March - UNAMI

BAGHDAD, April 1 (KUNA) -- The United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI) announced Wednesday that around 1,234 Iraqi were killed and 2,874 others injured by acts of violence and terrorism in the country during last March.
"The number of civilians killed was 729, including 42 civilian police, and the number of civilians injured was 1,785, including 98 civilian police," UNAMI said in a statement, adding that a further 268 members of the Iraqi security forces were killed and 387 were injured.
"Baghdad was the worst affected Governorate with 1,290 civilian casualties, 362 killed and 928 injured," said UNAMI, noting that Diyala suffered 51 killed and 75 injured; Salaadin suffered 34 killed and 48 injured, and Ninewa 20 killed and 15 injured.
Meanwhile, Jan Kubis, Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General for Iraq (SRSG) expressed his shock to see that "Iraqis continue to bear the brunt of appalling numbers of casualties caused by successive waves of violence, which are threatening with additional suffering and misery." Kubis called on the Iraqi government to do its best in ensuring protection of safety and security of civilians in line with fundamental human rights principles and humanitarian law. (end) ahh.ma
