BEIRUT, March 6 (KUNA) -- UN Undersecretary General for Humanitarian Affairs Valerie Amos on Friday expressed hope Lebanon would get sufficient support during the forthcoming international conference for Syrian refugees due in Kuwait on March 31.
Amos, in a statement at end of her visit to Lebanon, hoped the country would get ample backing during the forthcoming Kuwait-hosted convention to help most impoverished people in Lebanon, including citizens and Syrian refugees.
Lebanon is hosting the highest proportion of refugees in the world, as compared to the number of the population, Amos said, adding that local utilities have declined and joblessness has soared since flare-up of the Syrian crisis in 2011.
Amos, during the visit, held talks with top leaders namely Prime Minister Tammam Salam on prospected aid for the country. She also toured regions in the south and Mount Lebanon.
The government is striving to secure USD 2.1 billion to aid the most impoverished residents of the country, half of whom are Lebanese. It has worked out a plan to secure humanitarian assistance for Syrian families, simultaneously with boosting investments in social services, infrastructure and other key sectors. (end) ayb.rk
