5.5-magnitude quake injures 32 in SW China

TOKYO, March 2 (KUNA) -- Thirty two people have been injured after a 5.5 magnitude earthquake struck southwest China's Yunnan Province on the previous day, state-run Xinhua News Agency reported Monday, citing local authorities.
As of Monday morning, the tremor that struck Lincang City on Sunday evening had affected more than 67,000 residents, displacing nearly 12,400, the city's civil affairs bureau said in a statement.
Seven of the injured were severely hurt. In addition, over 220 homes were razed and about 16,000 were seriously damaged in the two counties, it said.
The area is a sparsely populated county that borders Myanmar and the houses in its rural areas are not built to sustain earthquakes.
A 6.5-magnitude earthquake hit Yunnan's Ludian County last August, claiming more than 600 lives and destroying over 80,000 homes. (end) mk.tg
