Australia wins Asian Cup after beating S. Korea in extra time

KUWAIT, Jan 31 (KUNA) -- Hosts Australia won the Asian Cup title after beating South Korea 2-1 in a difficult final on Saturday at Sydney Stadium.
Substitute James Troisi scored halfway through extra time and gave the Socceroos their maiden title.
Son Heung-min of South Korea scored the equalizer in the 90th minute to send the encounter into the extra half an hour, cancelling out Massimo Luongo's goal in the last minute of first half.
Both teams performed well in front of waves of fans in green and gold in a crowd of 76,000 and exchanged attacks on each other.
South Koreans squandered some opportunities and consequently the game ended in favor of the hosts.
This win gave the Socceroos a first title since defecting from Oceania nine years ago, while South Korea's anguish continued after failing to break a hoodoo in the tournament stretching back to 1960.
The UAE and Iraq came in third and fourth places in the same tournament respectively. (end) fsh.abd.hm
