Arab League, GCC condemn terrorist Sinai blasts

KUWAIT, Jan 30 (KUNA) -- The chiefs of the Arab League, its parliament and the Gulf Cooperation Council have all condemned the series of "terrorist" bombings that targeted several security locations in Egypt's northern Sinai which led to the killing and injury of dozens on Thursday.
One of the largest terrorist bombings in years witnessed in Egypt, carried out by the Islamic State (ISIL) group's wing in Egypt, on more than a half-dozen security facilities claimed the lives of at least 30 people and wounded around 50 others.
The Arab League stands firmly by Egypt in its war against terrorism, said its Secretary General Nabil Al-Araby in a statement, who called on the international community to follow suit in supporting the nation.
This "dangerous scourge," he said referring to terrorism, is taking the region and the world by storm and needs to be tackled.
Arab Parliament Speaker Ahmad Al-Jarwan described the incident as a "cowardly terrorist" act that will never weaken the determination of the Egyptian people and leadership in tackling terrorism followed by holding parliamentary elections.
The bombings will not impede "their (Egyptian people) path towards achieving complete democracy through voting for a free Egyptian parliament that expresses the will of the people," he said in a separate statement.
Terrorist operations, he said that "do not bear a nationality, religion or morals" across Egypt, the Arab world and Europe illustrate the need for combined international efforts to tackle these acts.
He went on to urge a statement of fierce condemnation from the Security Council, and the formation of what he described as "global institutions specialized in tackling terrorism" through an international coordination of intelligence.
For his part, Gulf Cooperation Council Secretary General Abdullatif Al-Zayani said that Arab Gulf nations condemn these "atrocious terrorist crimes" carried out by people who are bereft of humane and Islamic morality and principle.
He pledged the GCC bloc's support of Egypt in its anti-terrorism efforts. The GCC chief also expressed sorrow over the huge loss of life and expressed hope of a swift recovery for those injured. (end) kt.sd
