EU adopt adopts new measures on counter-terrorism

BRUSSELS, Jan 29 (KUNA) -- The European Commission Thursday adopted new measures and upgraded the Schengen Information System (SIS) which will allow better information exchange on terrorist suspects amongst law enforcement authorities, state security services and border guards throughout the 28 member visa-free travel Schengen zone. "By this new action SIS will reinforce the efforts of Member States to invalidate personal identification documents of persons who may join terrorist groups outside the EU," it said in a statement.
The measures will substantially contribute to more effective border controls as when checks of travel documents are carried out at the EU external borders such documents must be seized and the person concerned will be detained, it noted.
Meanwhile, EU Commissioner for Home Affairs, Dimitris Avramopoulos, is in Riga , Latvia, today to participate in discussions and present this decision at the informal meeting of EU interior ministers. Latvia holds the current EU Presidency. (end) nk.hs
