UNSC condemns UNIFIL peacekeeper's death

NEW YORK, Jan 29 (KUNA) -- Members of the UN Security Council (UNSC) condemned in the strongest terms the death of UNIFIL Spanish peacekeeper, which occurred in the context of fire exchange along the blue-line, Ambassador Cristian Barros of Chile told reporters late Wednesday.
Leaving the urgent closed-door consultation discussing UN Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL), Ambassador Barros, who is also the President of the Security Council for the current month, expressed the member states' deepest sympathy to the family of the fallen peacekeeper and the government of Spain.
He told reporters that Assistant Secretary General for Peacekeeping Operations Edmond Mulet had briefed the Council on the latest attacks in South Lebanon.
On his part, Ambassador Roman Oyarzun Marchesi of Spain expressed his deepest concern over the deterioration of the situation in South Lebanon.
He condemned this serious breach of the cessation of hostilities between Lebanon and Israel in violation of resolution 1701, and expressed to reporters his strongest condemnation on the death of the UNIFIL Spanish peacekeeper, which occurred because of these events.
Marchesi called on all sides to exercise the most restraint to respect the blue-line and to reserve the stability of Lebanon.
"I did ask for a full investigation of the events," he noted. (end) mao.hb
