The WHO Healthy Cities project is a global movement aiming to engage local governments in health development through a process of political commitment, institutional change, capacity-building, partnership-based planning and innovative projects. The project indicates that health is the business of all sectors and local governments are in a unique leadership position, with power to protect and promote their citizens' health and well-being. The initiative is not only concerned with the health sector, but it includes the health considerations in economic, regeneration and urban development efforts.
In May 2014, Yarmouk was declared as the first Kuwaiti member of the project after organizing activities to improve health and environment in the city, leading it to fulfill WHO's requirements.
The activities included a fight against obesity, a walking marathon, beautification and cleaning. Moreover, Yarmouk had other achievements including setting a well-equipped walking track, planting trees, washing the streets, saving power and water and establishing an environmental-friendly park, among other life-improving activities.(end) ran.tb.ag
