CAIRO, Dec 23 (KUNA) -- Arab League Secretary General Nabil Al-Araby welcomed here on Tuesday the newly-elected President of Tunisia Beji Caid Essebsi.
Al-Araby sincerely congratulated Essebsi and Tunisian people on this significant achievement, noting that the presidential elections reflected the free will of Tunisian voters and showed that they trust Essebsi, said a statement by Al-Araby.
He affirmed Arab League's resolve to fully cooperate with the newly-elected leadership of Tunisia and provide all kinds of support to it in order to establish the democratic process in the country and enhance the state's institutions to meet the aspirations of the Tunisian people, who were the first spark of Arab Spring revolutions, it noted.
Tunisia's Higher Electoral Commission announced on Monday that Essebsi, leader of the Nidaa Tounes Party, won Tunisia's presidential elections after rivalling incumbent Moncef Marzouki.
Essebsi received 55.68 percent of the valid votes in the run-off held on Sunday, the commission said, noting Marzouki got 44.32 percent.
This is the first free presidential vote held in Tunisia since the Tunisian Revolution ousted Zine El-Abidine Ben Ali on 14 January 2011. (end) mfm.asm.hm
