Polling booths open for Tunisia's presidential elections

TUNIS, Dec 21 (KUNA) -- Tunisians headed to the polling stations on Sunday to elect their new president in the second round of the presidential elections.
This round will conclude the democratic transition process of the country, which started after the 14th January revolution in 2011, leading to the fall of former president Zine El Abidine Ben Ali's regime.
The first round was won by leader of the anti-Islamist Nidaa Tounes Party, Beji Caid Essebsi, on November 23, with 46.39 percent of votes, while the incumbent President Moncef Marzouki won 43.33 percent.
This is the first presidential election since the constitution was approved by the Constituent Assembly of Tunisia, established on October 23, 2011.
President of the Assembly of the Representatives of the People Mohamed Ennaceur said he was eager to see large numbers of citizens participating in the political event, especially after the success of the legislative elections.
The official called on all Tunisian parties, national organizations and people to work on achieving positive results in this round, to ensure their country's stability.(end) aly.ag
