UNSC renews Syrian humanitarian resolution

NEW YORK, Dec 17 (KUNA) -- UN Security Council Wednesday adopted unanimously resolution 2191, renewing Syria humanitarian resolution 2165, for a period of 12 months, until January 10, 2016.
The Council noted with grave concern that impunity in Syria contributed to widespread violations and abuses of human rights, as well as violations of international humanitarian law. Therefore, the stressed the need to end such impunities.
The UNSC expressed its full support for the Special Envoy of the Secretary General for Syria, Staffan de Mistura, and looked forward, in particular, to further advice from him concerning his proposals aimed at reducing violence, including the implementation of freeze zones.
The Council reaffirmed that it will take further measures under the Charter of the UN in the event of non-compliance with this resolution, or resolutions 2139 (2014) or 2165 (2014) by any party to the Syrian domestic conflict, it concluded.
In this regard, Najib Ghadbian, the Special Representative of the Syrian National Coalition to the UN, stated that with the adoption of today's resolution, the UN Security Council has once again empowered UN agencies with the authority to provide cross-border assistance-irrespective of Syrian regime consent.
A safe zone, he said, would save millions of lives, and would ensure relief from regime aerial strikes and attacks from terrorist extremist groups, as it would also provide the long-term foundation needed to sustain humanitarian aid delivery across the adjacent border into the safe zone, he noted in a statement.
