Kuwait University celebrates its 48th anniversary

By Amna Ashour KUWAIT, Nov 26 (KUNA) -- Kuwait University is celebrating tomorrow its 48th anniversary of its official establishment on September 28/ 1966 by His Highness the late Amir Sheikh Sabah Al-Salem Al-Sabah amid a solemn ceremony.
Kuwait University was established according to law number 29/1966, and was officially opened five years after Kuwait gained its independence.
The idea behind founding a university in Kuwait came in 1960 when the Ministry of Education formed a committee consisting of a number of experts from the American University of Beirut (AUB), Assuit University in Egypt, and University of Cambridge.
The first academic years started in September 1964 in two faculties; namely the faculty of Arts and the faculty if Sciences, and later in 1966 it was officially opened with a total of 418 students and 31 faculty members.
Kuwait University later witnessed the launching of a number of new faculties in various disciplines, and in the academic year of 2014/2015, it offered education to a total of 38,648 students, along with 1,565 faculty members. (end) asa.tb.lb
