GENEVA, Nov 25 (KUNA) -- The International Organization for Migration (IOM) honoring of His Highness the Amir Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah will be as shining as ever in Kuwait's memory, UN Secretary-General's Envoy for Humanitarian Affairs Abdullah Al-Maatouq said on Tuesday.
Al-Maatouq, also Chairman of the Kuwaiti-based International Islamic Charitable Organization (IICO) and an Amiri Diwan Advisor, made the statement in his address to the ceremony held by the IOM Council in its 105 session in Geneva to honor His Highness the Amir.
Offering His Highness the Amir an appreciation award, the highest order by the IOM, comes in recognition of his donations to the Organization's programs caring for the displaced, migrants and refugees worldwide, Al-Maatouq said.
He noted that the IOM move followed the unprecedented UN honoring of His Highness the Amir as a "Humanitarian Leader" and Kuwait as a "Humanitarian Center" on 9 September.
This celebrates Kuwait's record copious with humanitarian initiatives, conferences, developmental summits that mustered regional and international efforts to support the poor around the globe, he said.
Generous donations have been offered by His Highness the Amir and the State of Kuwait to victims of floods, quakes, desertification, armed conflicts and famine in various parts of the world, he said, noting that humanitarian work in Kuwait is age-old and deep-rooted.
Meanwhile, Al-Maatouq referred to the IICO, saying it is operating in 136 countries and has a representative at the UN. He stressed the Organization's charitable and noble humanitarian message, saying it is keen on enhancing partnerships, exchanging information and learning from expertise of similar international organizations.
He expressed pleasure over the IICO signing a MoU with the IOM for exchanging expertise and to cooperate on alleviating people's sufferings "everywhere." Al-Maatouq commended the efforts by the IOM mission in Kuwait and its cooperation with the ministries, institutions and public benefit societies.
