Iraqi forces suppress attack by ISIL in Ramadi

BAGHDAD, Nov 21 (KUNA) -- Iraqi security forces supported by tribesmen suppressed an attack by ISIL from three locations in major cities of Al-Anbar province, resulting in killing a police chief and four of his guards during the clashes on Friday.
The attack coincided with minor operations carried out by ISIL in the areas of Al-Haouz, 20th Street in center of Al-Ramadi city.
A security source in Anbar Operations Command said that ISIL gunmen attacked in the eastern part of the city from three positions, however tribesmen and security forces were able to confront them and eliminate them.
The source confirmed the attack was the deadliest in months and ISIL used all kinds of weapons.
Al-Anbar President of the Provincial Council Sabah Karhout told KUNA that the attack began in the early hours of the day and ISIL militants were able to seize Al-Sajaria village, about 20 kilometers east of Ramadi.
Karhout added security forces and tribesmen killed 12 ISIL members who were trying to raid a mosque in the village, later police units were dispatched to the scene.
ISIL members used three bombs on military Humvee wheels and were detonated by suicide bombers near Sheikh Majid Ali Suleiman area, and no reports on the amount of losses, Karhout added.
Karhout also confirmed that the killing of Police Director Colonel Majid Fahdawi and four of his guards during the battles east of Ramadi. (end) mhg.mb
