VAN, Turkey, Nov 20 (KUNA) -- A Kuwaiti delegation, led by International Islamic Charitable Organization (IICO) Chairman and Amiri Diwan's Advisor Abdullah Al-Maatouq, has arrived in the Turkish city of Van to launch a Kuwait-funded village there.
The village carries the name of the "Humanitarian Leader", the UN title which was won by His Highness the Amir of Kuwait Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah in New York on September 9.
His Highness the Amir had instructed the IICO to establish this village in order to provide a shelter to Turkish people who were affected by the destructive earthquake that hit Van in Turkey's eastern Van Province, Al-Maatouq, who is also the UN Secretary-General's Envoy for Humanitarian Affairs, told KUNA here on Thursday.
The IICO had signed a cooperative agreement with Turkey's Humanitarian Relief Foundation to set up the USD-1.5-million village that includes 200 prefab homes to shelter those people who were affected by the earthquake, he said.
The village is home to four apartment blocks, a mosque and several other service utilities, Al-Maatouq added, noting that the second stage of the project would cost USD 2.5 million.
The "Humanitarian Leader" Village reflects Kuwait's interest in reinforcing and bolstering Islamic and humanitarian bonds with Turkey, which has close relations with the State of Kuwait, he pointed out.
The IICO chief voiced sincere thanks and appreciation to His Highness the Amir for this charitable project in Turkey.
Van is a city in eastern Turkey's Van Province, located on the eastern shore of Lake Van. The city has a long history as a major urban area. (end) rs.mt
