Qur'anic competition set for Sunday

KUWAIT, Nov 19 (KUNA) -- The 18th competition for memorizing and reciting the Holy Quran is to be launched on Sunday, under the aegis of His Highness the Amir Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, said a Kuwaiti official on Wednesday.
In a press statement, Secretary General of the Ministry of Awqaf and Islamic Affairs Abdulmohsen Al-Kharafi said the annual competition stood as a magnet for those wishing to take part in it to exhibit their prowess in Qur'anic memorization and recitation.
He stressed that the competition was open every year to all sectors of the public, male and female.
Up to 2215 participants have shown interest in the competition this year, out of whom 1423 have been selected for the final rounds of it, said the Secretary General's Deputy Mohammad Al-Jalahma, in a similar press statement.
The participants this year included 666 adults, 742 youngsters, and 106 people with special needs, among them 24 sightless ones, he said.
The competition's venue will be the Grand State Mosque with the attendance of the public and Minister of Awqaf and Islamic Affairs Yaqoub Al-Sanea. (end) amn.ajs
