PARIS, Nov 17 (KUNA) -- French President Francois Hollande on Monday issued a statement welcoming the temporary resolution of the crisis in Burkina Faso and the appointment of Michel Kafando as interim president for a one-year term.
Kafando, 72, a former diplomat and Foreign Minister, was accepted as interim president by the military junta which took over in Burkina Faso last month after a political vacuum emerged with the sudden departure of President Blaise Campaore.
The former president, who ruled for 27 years, was forced to leave after popular revolt opposed his attempt to modify the Constitution and run for another term.
The military temporarily took power before handing over government to Kafando, who will oversee a transition until elections in 12 month's time.
Hollande, who is on an Asian tour, issued a statement "rejoicing at the adoption by the different involved parties in Burkina Faso of a transition charter that will lead the country to presidential elections." He congratulated Kafando and said France was at the side of Burkina Faso during this crucial period in its history. (end) jk.mt
