Israeli attacks on Al-Aqsa Mosque portend serious repercussions -- Palestine's envoy

CAIRO, Nov 1 (KUNA) -- Jamal Al-Shobky, Palestinian ambassador to Egypt, warned Friday that repeated attacks by Israel on Al-Aqsa Mosque that prevent Muslims from performing religious rituals violate flagrantly the rights of Palestinians and Muslims as a whole .
In a press statement, Al-Shobky, who is also Palestinian Arab League permanent representative, said that such kinds of provocations recall the "sorrowful incident" committed by a Jewish extremist when he opened fire on Muslims while praying in Ibrahimi Mosque in Hebron in 1994. As a result, the Ibrahimi mosque has been split into a Jewish section and a Muslim section since the Jewish extremist opened fire and killed more than two dozen worshipers there.
He added that such provocations run counter to all international laws and norms and agitate the Muslims' feelings.
"This portends serious repercussions and beats the drums of war," he said.
He pointed out that the right-wing Israeli government had committed atrocities against Palestinians and the holy sites when its forces broke into Al-Quds city, occupied in 1967, and its settlers also desecrated Al-Aqsa Mosque.
He went to say that settlers seek to achieve their plot by dividing Al-Aqsa Mosque into sections.
Al-Shobky urged the Arab and Islamic nations to move quickly to defend their sanctities and support Palestinians who have been fighting against Israeli forces.
He welcomed Sweden's decision that recognized a Palestinian State, hoping that the rest of the world would make the same move. (end) mfm.rgh.hm
