NAM reaffirm peaceful settlement of disputes

NEW YORK, Oct 30 (KUNA) -- Iran, on the behalf of the Non-Aligned Movement, reaffirmed and underscored today its principled positions concerning peaceful settlement of disputes, and non-use or threat of use of force.
Iranian Ambassador and Charge d'Affairs Gholamhossein Deghani said in a statement before the 69th General Assembly on "Report of the International Court of Justice," that the ICJ has a significant role in promoting and encouraging the settlement of international disputes by peaceful means, as reflected in the United Nations Charter, and in such a manner that "international peace and security, and justice, are not endangered".
The Movement also invited the General Assembly, other organs of the UN and the specialized agencies duly authorized, to request advisory opinions of the ICJ on legal questions arising within the scope of their activities, the official added.
The Non-Alligned Movement called on Israel the "occupying power," he said, to fully respect the July 2004 ICJ advisory opinion entitled "Legal Consequences of the Construction of a Wall in the Occupied Palestinian Territory," and called upon all States to respect and ensure respect of the provisions therein for the realization of the end of the Israeli occupation that began in 1967 and the independence of the State of Palestine with East Jerusalem as it's capital.
On his part, President of the International Court of Justice, Judge Peter Tomka, drew attention to the importance of the role of Member States in the composition of the Court.
"A great responsibility is placed on Member States, for it is they who are called upon to choose and elect the Members of the Court -- who will be tasked with carrying out a high and noble judicial mission," he told the General Assembly. (end) mao
