Parliament speaker condemns Sinai explosion

KUWAIT, Oct 25 (KUNA) -- Speaker of the Kuwaiti National Assembly and President of the Arab Parliament Union Marzouq Al-Ghanim on Saturday condemned the "criminal terrorist attacks" which occurred in Sinai on Friday, killing and wounding scores of the Egyptian Army troops.
"Such criminal acts would not discourage Egypt's valiant army which has been a safety valve for Egyptians and Arabs," Al-Ghanim said in a press statement.
"Such condemnable operations necessitate concerted official, popular, Arab and Islamic efforts to fight the phenomenon of terrorism under the guise of Islam," he added.
He hoped that Egypt would be protected against any evil acts, prayed for souls of the victims and wished the wounded quick recovery.
A car bomb on Friday killed at least 26 Egyptian soldiers at a checkpoint in Sinai.
The attack took place near El Arish, the main town in the north of the restive peninsula. Three more died in a shooting in the town itself. The bomb blast is one of the deadliest attacks in Sinai for months. At least 28 more people were injured.
The army has been fighting a campaign against Sinai-based militants, who have carried out a string of attacks there. (end) tab.mt
