UN takes steps forward towards peace, stability

NEW YORK, Oct 24 (KUNA) -- A year filled with establishments and steps forward towards peace and stability, the United Nations seized every opportunity to address global challenges and seek solutions to world issues of pending nature.
Celebrating the 69th anniversary of the founding of this international organization, the UN played a major role in many global crises and led the way for humanitarian relief.
In the Humanitarian field, the UN Chief Ban Ki-moon lauded the role played by Kuwait in this issue, and said Kuwait has shown exemplary humanitarian leadership.
Therefore, a celebration was held in the UN headquarters in September, where Ban thanked in a luncheon His Highness the Amir of Kuwait Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, and the people of Kuwait for their outstanding generosity towards Syrians and Iraqis in need.
Kuwait has hosted two pledging conferences in 2013 and 2014, as well as hosting the meetings of the Top Donors Group for Syria and other regional conferences for effective humanitarian action.
Such recognition of leadership came in result to Kuwait's engagement in the humanitarian field and donations of millions of dollars for humanitarian relief in the Middle East, in addition to Kenya, Ethiopia, Chad, Sudan, Nigeria and Somalia.
For settling crises peacefully and preventing wars, this international organization was a substantial player in the Liberation of Kuwait back in the 90s.
On the same day of the Iraqi invasion to Kuwait, the Security Council adopted resolution 660 (1990), determining to bring the invasion and occupation of Kuwait by Iraq to an end, and to restore the sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity of Kuwait.
Days later, another resolution was adopted 661 (1990) demanding Iraq to withdraw immediately and unconditionally all its forces to the positions they were located on August1, 1990.
The international organization that was founded by 51 countries in 1945, after World War II, it came into existence when the Charter had been ratified by China, France, the Soviet Union, the United Kingdom, the United States and by a majority of other signatories. It was committed to maintaining international peace and security, developing friendly relations among nations and promoting social progress, better living standards and human rights.
Today, the UN of 193 Member States was able to express their views via the General Assembly (UNGA), the Security Council (UNSC), the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) as well as other bodies and committees. It was able throughout the years to reach different parts of the globe, with help of its specialized agencies, funds and programs.
The Organization works on a broad range of fundamental issues, from sustainable development, environment and refugees protection, disaster relief, counter terrorism, disarmament and non-proliferation, to promoting democracy, human rights, gender equality and the advancement of women, governance, economic and social development and international health, clearing land-mines expanding food production, and more, in order to achieve its goals and coordinate efforts for a safer world for this and future generations.(end) mao.gta
