UNGA elects Human Rights Council members

NEW YORK, Oct 21 (KUNA) -- UN General Assembly elected Tuesday 15 members of the Human Rights Council that shall serve for a period of three years and not eligible for immediate re-election after two consecutive terms.
The 15 members' seats are for: African States, Asia-Pacific States, Eastern European States, Latin American and Caribbean States, and Western European and Other States.
Four seats for African States, elected were Ghana (187 votes), Nigeria (187 votes), Congo (185 votes) and Botswana (183 votes).
Asia-Pacific States elected India (162 votes), Indonesia (152 votes), Bangladesh (149 votes) and Qatar (142 votes).
Eastern European States elected Albania (176 votes) and Latvia (175 votes).
Latin American and Caribbean States elected ElSalvador (151 votes), Bolivia (144 votes) and Paraguay (139 votes).
Western European and Other States elected Portugal (184 votes) Netherlands (172 votes).
In accordance with paragraphs IV and V of General Assembly resolution 65/281, from 2013, the Human Rights Council will start its yearly membership cycle on January 1.
Kuwait received two votes only at the voting process, and will retire from the Human Rights Council December 31, 2014. (end) mao.bs
