US designates terrorists from TPP, al-Qaeda

WASHINGTON, Oct 21 (KUNA) -- The US State Department designated deputy leader of the terrorist group Tehrik-e Taliban Pakistan (TPP) Khan Said and long time al-Qaeda member Ramzi Mawafi as "Specially Designated Global Terrorists" on Tuesday.
"The consequences of these designations include a prohibition against U.S. persons engaging in transactions with Said and Mawafi, and the freezing of all property and interests of Said and Mawaf," said the State Department in a statement.
Said had previously fought in Afghanistan and is believed to have been involved in an attack on a US Naval base in Karachi. He is also credited with a 2012 jailbreak in which the Taliban freed 400 inmates in Bannu, Pakistan.
Mawafi had escaped from an Egyptian prison and is best known as the former doctor to Osama bin Laden.
He also served as an explosives expert for al-Qaeda and is, "now believed to be in the Sinai Peninsula coordinating among militant groups and helping to arrange money and weapons to support violent extremist activity." (end) ak.mt
