Kuwait to mark World Osteoporosis Day Monday

By Shaima Al-Rowaished KUWAIT, Oct 19 (KUNA) -- Kuwait will mark Monday the World Osteoporosis Day with a plethora of activities to raise public awareness about the bone disease.
Osteoporosis is a progressive bone disease that is characterized by a decrease in bone mass and density which can lead to an increased risk of fracture.
It is also defined by the World Health Organization (WHO) as a bone mineral density of 2.5 standard deviations or more below the mean peak bone mass (average of young, healthy adults) as measured by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry; the term "established osteoporosis" includes the presence of a fragility fracture.
The risk of osteoporosis fractures can be reduced with lifestyle changes and in those with previous osteoporosis related fractures, medications. Lifestyle change includes diet, exercise, and preventing falls.
"Having sufficient amount of calcium and vitamin D whether in form of food or medication as well as doing exercises is of great importance in preventing osteoporosis," Head of the Kuwait Osteoporosis Society Abdulnasser Al-Othman told KUNA.
World Osteoporosis Day takes place every year on October 20, launching a year-long campaign dedicated to raising global awareness of the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of osteoporosis and metabolic bone disease.
Organized by the International Osteoporosis Foundation (IOF) every year, World Osteoporosis Day involves campaigns by national osteoporosis patient societies from around the world with activities in over 90 countries. (end) sr.tb.ibi
