China warns foreign countries against Hong Kong interference

TOKYO, Oct 15 (KUNA) -- China has urged foreign countries to stay out of Hong Kong's affairs and refrain from supporting "Occupy Central" activities there, according to state-run Xinhua News Agency. "We have repeatedly stressed that Hong Kong is a special administrative region of China and that Hong Kong's affairs are China's domestic affairs", Foreign Ministry spokesman Hong Lei said in news briefing on Tuesday when asked to comment on some countries' backing for the Occupy Central movement in Hong Kong. "All countries should speak and act cautiously on the issue and refrain from interfering in the domestic affairs of China or sending out wrong messages of support for the Occupy Central activities", the spokesman added.
On Wednesday, Hong Kong's police said they arrested 45 people as they cleared Lung Wo Road outside the Chief Executive Office.
Hong Kong, which returned to the Chinese rule from British colonial administration in 1997, has been plunged into political crisis following Beijing's refusal to grant citizens full universal suffrage. The demonstrators have been occupying downtown streets since late September in protest at a decision taken by China's National People's Congress Standing Committee last August, which says candidates in the 2017 Chief Executive election must be approved by a pro-Beijing nominating panel.(end) mk.ag
