US Secret Service chief resigns due to security breaches

WASHINGTON, Oct 1 (KUNA) -- The Director of the US Secret Service, Julia Pierson, submitted her resignation Wednesday afternoon after facing harsh criticism from Congress due to two recent breaches of security that has tarnished the reputation of the department.
"She believed that it (her resignation) was in the best interests of the agency to which she dedicated her career," said White House Spokesperson Josh Earnest to reporters.
Earnest indicated that President Barack Obama called Pierson to express, "appreciation for her service to the agency and the country." Until a permanent replacement will be nominated, Joe Clancy will serve as the interim Secret Service Director. Clancy, "had served with distinction in the Secret Service until the summer of 2011," affirmed Earnest.
The Department of Homeland Security will now begin to review the September 19 incident in which an individual scaled a fence on the lawn and was able to gain access into the White House. This panel will also be responsible for making recommendations about who will be suitable as the next director. (end) ak.hb
