Blast targeting army convoy kills, wounds 9 N. Pakistan

ISLAMABAD, Sept 23, (KUNA) -- At least three people were killed and six others wounded in a blast targeting convoy of the paramilitary Frontier Corps (FC) in Peshawar city of northern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province of Pakistan on Tuesday, said officials Monday.
A senior police official, CCPO Peshawar Ijaz Khan, told reporters that three people were killed and six others were injured in the blast targeting a convoy of the FC carrying a high-ranking military official. He further confirmed that Brigadier Khalid Javed who was the target of the attack, narrowly escaped the explosion and is safe. Those killed included a woman, an FC man and a passerby, khan added.
Shafqat Malik, AIG bomb disposal squad said that 45 kilograms of explosives were used in the blast and mortar shells were also put in with the explosives to increase the impact of the blast. The security forces immediately reached the site of the blast and a search operation went underway. The injured and dead were shifted to a nearby hospital where the administration confirmed that three people lost their lives. Two among the injured are security personnel and three of the wounded are reported critical.
The attack in the provincial capital came at a time when Pakistan military is engaged in a comprehensive military operation 'Zarb e Azb' against foreign and local militants in North Waziristan tribal region of Pakistan bordering Afghanistan. (end) sbk.hb
