Ban welcomes MISCA transfer of authority to MINUSCA

NEW YORK, Sept 15 (KUNA) -- The United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon welcomed on Sunday night the transfer of authority from the African-led International Support Mission to the Central African Republic (MISCA) to the United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in the Central African Republic (MINUSCA). This transfer of authority marks the successful completion of MISCA's mandate and the beginning of MINUSCA's military and police action in the Central African Republic, an attributable statement to the spokesman for Ban said.
The UN Chief expressed his great appreciation to MISCA, which has saved and protected many lives, alongside the French Sangaris forces and the European Union Force in the Central African Republic.
Ki-moon also said he was grateful for the exemplary collaboration between the United Nations and the African Union to ensure a seamless transfer of authority, including the re-hatting of as many MISCA contingents as possible, in accordance with United Nations standards.
Ban welcomed the continued close cooperation between the United Nations and the African Union, as well as the important role of the international mediation, the Economic Community of Central African States and other partners in the region that will accompany the Central African Republic's transition.
As of today, MINUSCA's presence stands at some 6500 troops, 1000 police and a complement of civilian staff that are progressively deploying throughout the country, he said.
"The Mission will prioritize the protection of civilians, as well as support to the political process and state-building efforts," he added.
Furthermore, Ban reiterated his serious concern about continued attacks against civilians, especially outside of Bangui, as he renewed his call on all parties to put an immediate end to the violence, in accordance with the cessation of hostilities agreement.
He also urged all Central African stakeholders to sustain their commitment to an inclusive political process to ensure the successful completion of the country's transition.(end) mao.ag
