France makes air drop of aid to northern Iraq

PARIS, Sept 1 (KUNA) -- The French air force has carried out an air drop of humanitarian aid over northern Iraq to help alleviate the suffering of population in the Amerli area, where Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) forces are besieging local populations, the Foreign Ministry announced Monday.
The air drop was carried out on August 30 and consisted of three tons of humanitarian aid, mainly water and food products.
France said that the operation was carried out in coordination with Australia, the United States and Britain and was destined to help the local population whose survival is threatened by the IS encirclement.
Already on August 10, France delivered humanitarian aid to northern Iraq, mainly in the Kurdish region, to help tens of thousands of displaced Iraqis who had taken refuge from ISIL attacks.
France has been a driving force in a decision by the European Union to establish a humanitarian supply line to the region.
France has also delivered weapons to Kurdish Peshmerga fighters who are involved in combating ISIL forces.
"France will continue to being aid to the Iraqi population threatened by violence and terrorism," the Foreign Ministry said on Monday. (end) jk.ibi
