Palestinians against demilitarization of factions in Gaza - Hamas

GAZA, Aug 30 (KUNA) -- Hamas on Saturday underestimated reports that a draft resolution will be submitted soon to the United Nations Security Council demanding the demilitarization of the Palestinian factions in Gaza Strip.
"Any draft targeting the resistance groups has no value as it will be against the international law, said a statement by Sami Abu Zohri, the spokesman of Hamas.
"Our people reject demilitarizing the Palestinian factions in Gaza. What is needed is to demilitarize the Israeli occupation forces and prevent the United States from providing them with weapons, which target children and women," the statement underscored.
Efforts are being done to prompt the Security Council to issue a long-term solution to avoid recurrence of the war in Gaza Strip, different media reported, citing sources at the UN.
Those efforts are made by the US, aiming mainly at demilitarizing Palestinian factions in the Strip, the media said.
It was reported that the US mission at the UN Security Council submitted a draft resolution to make Gaza a weapon-free zone and destroy all border tunnels with Egypt and the occupied territories.
The draft reportedly calls on the UNSC member states to take urgent measures to prevent direct and indirect military supplies and sales provided to Gaza via its territories or citizens.
It calls on the United Nation Secretary-General to set up a mechanism to help implement that resolution terms, including facilitating a process of safe transport to building materials which are implemented in coordination with the Palestinian Authority.
It calls on the UN or any other international bodies to set up an international monitoring system to supervise building materials entering Gaza after specifying the nature and details of any building project in Strip.
It is expected that the indirect negotiations between Palestinian factions and Israel will resume in Cairo this week after both sides agreed on a one-month ceasefire, mediated by Egypt, last Tuesday.
Palestinians want to settle a number of delayed issues; the release of Palestinians prisoners at Israeli jails and rebuilding the seaport and airport of Gaza. (end) mt.hm
