Algerian activists gather tons of aid to Palestinian children

ALGIERS, Aug 29 (KUNA) -- Algerian activists gathered via social networking sites more than three tons of medicines and food supplies to help the children of Gaza.
The activists launched a campaign weeks ago via social networking sites, urging Algerian youth to collect food and medicines at various neighborhoods and cities in Algeria.
Algerian authorities praised the initiative of Minister of National Solidarity, Family and Condition of Women Mounia Meslem, saying it "is a habit of the Algerian people to relieve the Palestinian people." The minister said in a statement to Algerian radio that she discussed with Palestinian Ambassador in Algiers Louay Mohamed Aissa ways of delivering the humanitarian contributions as well as the ministry's solidarity with the Palestinian people.
Algerian authorities have prepared a special program to aid Palestinian associations working in social and humanitarian fields, she added.
For his part, the Palestinian Ambassador applauded the Algerian efforts as "an extension of the relationship of brotherhood and solidarity between two countries." He stressed on the difficulty of humanitarian situation in Gaza especially with the high number of displaced Palestinians.
The recent Israeli attacks on Gaza lasted for 51 days with more than 2,140 victims, destruction of more than 50,000 homes and more than 260,000 Palestinians homeless, many waiting for relief aid, he added. (end) ft.hs
