PUTRAJAYA, Malaysia, Aug 28 (KUNA) -- On behalf of the GCC countries, Kuwait has shown support to Malaysia for vying for a non-permanent member seat at the UN Security Council for the 2015-2016 term.
Malaysian Foreign Minister Dato Sri Anifah Aman told KUNA, Thursday, that this endorsement reflects the strength of faith in Malaysia shown by Kuwait and other regional countries.
He added that Kuwait and his country have strong ties, especially, after his last visit to Kuwait where he met with His Highness the Deputy Amir and Crown Prince Sheikh Nawaf Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, His Highness the Prime Minister Sheikh Jaber Al-Mubarak Al-Sabah and Minister of State for Cabinet Affairs, Acting Minister of Justice and Acting Foreign Minister Sheikh Mohammad Al-Abdullah Al-Sabah.
The Malaysian Minister expressed hope that his country would get more support to get the UNSC seat. "Malaysia's candidature has been made easier with the Asia-Pacific group's endorsement early this year and Malaysia is so far the sole candidate from Asia contesting for a non-permanent UNSC seat," he added.
Malaysia has already held a UNSC non-permanent seat three times before, when it was elected for the first time in 1965 followed, for the second time, in 1989-1990. Malaysia last occupied a UNSC seat in 1999-2000.
Malaysia has, traditionally, been a major contributor in terms of personnel for peacekeeping operations under the UN support.
Its biggest battalion is currently in Lebanon while there are at present nearly 1,200 peace-keeping troops from Malaysia stationed around the world. (end) mam.aab.nfm
