US believes ISIL video depicts beheading of American journalist

WASHINGTON, Aug 20 (KUNA) -- The US indicated it has seen a video that purports the beheading of US journalist James Foley by the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) terrorist group.
"The intelligence community is working as quickly as possible to determine its authenticity," said National Security Council Spokesperson Caitlin Hayden in a statement Tuesday.
"If genuine, we are appalled by the brutal murder of an innocent American journalist and we express our deepest condolences to his family and friends." The video was posted by ISIL and titled, "A Message to America," indicated that Foley was killed in Iraq as a result of President Obama's decision to bomb fighters battling Kurdish forces north of Baghdad, according to American media. Foley was taken hostage in northwest Syria late November of 2012 by an unidentified gunman.
"We will provide more information when it is available," stressed Hayden. (end) ak.gta
