KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 8 (KUNA) -- Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak Friday asserted that the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) is one of key players that contributed to achieving peace, prosperity and stability in the region, noting stability of Malaysia is based on the stability of the whole region.
Addressing the nation on the 47th anniversary of the founding of ASEAN, the premier said that Malaysia, as one of the ASEAN founders, should be proud of its effort and role to ensure the success of the ASEAN.
Since its founding in 1976, ASEAN's objective has been to focus primarily on foreign relations, said Abdul Razak.
He pointed out that ASEAN formed an important point in establishing a safe, stable and prosperous region in southeast Asia, noting that ASEAN managed to gain the confidence of the international community.
ASEAN created a forward-looking society and played a key role in developing regional issues and solving disputes, in addition to establishing vital economies in the region, he added. With regard to Malaysia's selection to preside over ASEAN next year, he said his country took that responsibility very seriously and would strive to lead the organization as best as to be expected in the year 2015 and beyond.
