CAIRO, June 23 (KUNA) -- The Arab region is witnessing its worst ever humanitarian situation with hundreds of thousands of Arab people forced to flee their homes to escape violence or political unrest in their countries, regretted the Arab League Secretary General Nabil Al-Araby.
"The number of internally and externally displaced people is growing in many Arab countries," Al-Araby said in an event organized by the Arab League to mark the World Refugee Day.
"The plight of Syrian refugees is the world's worst humanitarian crisis in the 21st century." Al-Araby said that the Arab League is studying Kuwait Arab Summit's resolution relative to the adoption of a unified Arab mechanism to coordinate humanitarian aid distribution.
World Refugee Day, observed by the United Nations and countless civic groups around the world on June 20 each year, is dedicated to raising awareness of the situation of refugees throughout the world.
It was also meant to honor the courage, strength and determination of women, men and children who are forced to flee their homes under threat of persecution, conflict and violence.
For his part, Head of the Regional Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights Ambassador Mohammad Al-Deri said that the Arab region has the biggest number of refugees in the world.
"There are four million Palestinian refugees, 400,000 Iraqi refugees and 2.8 million Syrian refugees," he said.
Al-Deri spoke highly of the great role played by Kuwait in supporting humanitarian causes in the region and around the world.
He recalled Kuwait's hosting of the first and second aid pledging conferences for Syria donors which raised USD 3.9 billion in aid pledges, including USD 800 million donated by Kuwait.
Al-Deri lauded the generous donations and humanitarian aid of other Arab countries such as the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, Qatar, United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, Oman to Syrian refugees and to their hosting countries.
Meanwhile, Kuwait's Permanent Delegate to the Arab League Ambassador Aziz Al-Deehani stated that Kuwait has fulfilled all its aid pledges to Syrian refugees.
He also applauded the role played by the Arab League in tackling the refugees crisis in Syria and other Arab countries. (end) ms.mfm.ibi
