KUWAIT, June 3 (KUNA) -- Kuwaiti divers have lifted an abandoned three-ton net east of Doha port, in cooperation with the Cabinet committee of "removing encroachments on public properties." The neglected net was entangled at a depth of five meters, contributing to environmental pollution and hindering navigation. Though it was immense and heavy, Kuwait Dive Team of The Environmental Voluntary Foundation, managed to pull it to Al-Oshairej beach, using boats, then it was lifted from the waters with machines, said the head of the team, Walid Al-Shatti, to KUNA, on Tuesday.
He called for enforcing stiffer penalties on fishermen and sea-goers who violate the laws.
The Kuwaiti divers often remove neglected items such as nets and fishing devices off the Kuwaiti coast. The authorities have organized a series of campaigns to clear harbors dotting it.
Moreover, they have stressed on keenness of maintaining a clean maritime environment, and has appealed on fishermen to be cautious and abstain from any act that may damage coral reefs skirting Kuwaiti islands. (end) zik.tb.rk
