Arab League chief warns of worsening humanitarian situation in Syria

CAIRO, April 22 (KUNA) -- Secretary-General of the Arab League Nabil Al-Araby on Tuesday sounded the alarm about the worsening humanitarian situation in violence-hit Syria as the number of Syrian refugees is on the rise.
"The crisis in Syria causes a humanitarian catastrophe as there are six million internally displaced persons and nearly three million refugees in neighboring countries, mostly in Jordan and Lebanon," Al-Araby said during an Arab parliamentary hearing on human rights in Arab countries.
He called for providing more financial help to Jordan and Lebanon in order to ease out their financial burdens of hosting Syrian refugees.
On a possible revision of the Arab human rights charter, he said this issue was being considered with a view to complying with necessary requirements for a planned Arab human rights court.
Once put in effect, the court, which was decided during the Arab Summit in Doha in March 2013, will mark a watershed in the field of human rights in the Arab world, the chief of the Arab League believed.
Kuwait is partaking in the Arab parliamentary hearing with a delegation comprising Deputy National Assembly Speaker Mubarak Al-Khureinj and MPs Mohammad Al-Jabri, Faisal Al-Kandari and Khalil Abul. (end) ms.mab.mfm.mt
