MOSCOW, April 20 (KUNA) -- Two days after Geneva agreement to ease tension in Eastern Ukraine, five people were killed and one injured in clashes between pro-and anti-Russian armed men in the Eastern city of Slavyansk on Sunday.
The Russian news agency (Interfax) reported that the deaths fallen when Ukrainian nationalist militants attacked a checkpoint of pro-Russian armed men in the city. But no independent source has verified Interfax claim that Ukrainian nationalists stand behind the attack.
The incident was the most fatal since signing of the international Geneva agreement two days ago on ending "violence, intimidation, or provocative actions" in the Eastern Ukraine Province.
Russian Presidency Spokesman Dmitry Peskov told Russia's official TV that his country has set plans to deal with the current situation and the expected developments in Ukraine.
Pro-Russian militants have been occupying several governmental buildings in Eastern Ukraine, engaging in several acts of violence with the Ukrainian army.
Since the ouster of Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych earlier this year, the country has seen a rising tension with pro-Russian groups demanding secession from Ukraine and annexation to Russia, transforming Ukraine into a federation in which their regions would have broad autonomy. (end)
