Hagel, Al-Nuhayyan discuss bilateral defense, regional challenges

WASHINGTON, April 17 (KUNA) -- US Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel affirmed his country's "steadfast commitment" to the United Arab Emirates in a phone call with Crown Prince Mohammed Bin Zayed Al-Nuahayyan on Wednesday night, according to the Pentagon.
Hagel "affirmed the importance of maintaining strong bilateral defense cooperation to ensure a stable and secure Middle East," which he called "a common objective of both countries." He further highlighted "new forms of multilateral cooperation required to address the evolving challenges of the Middle East," and praised the UAE's "efforts to work with the United States and the members of the Gulf Cooperation Council to expand regional collaboration." Hagel and Al-Nuhayyan also discussed ongoing challenges in Syria, Egypt and Libya. (end) ys.hb
