India proposes global convention on no-first use of nuclear weapons

NEW DELHI, April 02 (KUNA) -- In a bid to rid the world of nuclear weapons, Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Wednesday proposed a global convention on no-first use of nuclear weapons, state run All India Radio (AIR) reported.
While addressing a seminar on a "Nuclear Free World: From Conception to Reality" here in New Delhi, AIR quoted the prime minister as saying that that if all states possessing nuclear weapons recognise and are prepared to declare it, "move to the establishment of global no-first use norm can be quick".
"In many ways it can open the ways to gradual reduction and finally elimination through a nuclear weapon convention," the Indian prime minister was quoted as saying by AIR.
The report stated that the Indian prime minister also stressed that it would also require political measures to ensure that the stability is maintained at the level as nuclear arsenal approaches zero.
"It is important to reduce the importance of nuclear weapons and a multilateral agreement is required for it," the prime minister stated.
The AIR report further stated that the Prime Minister noted that India supports a nuclear-free world, adding, it declared itself a nuclear state owing to the harsh security environment.
The Prime Minister said that by 2032, India intends to produce 62,000 MW of electricity through nuclear power, the AIR added. (end) wk.ibi
