GENEVA, Feb 28 (KUNA) -- Director-General of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) Peter Maurer extolled here on Friday Kuwait's voluntary annual support which this year reached USD three million and was handed over by Kuwait's Permanent delegate to the United Nations and international organizations in Geneva, Ambassador Jamal Al-Ghoneim.
Maurer in a statement to Kuwait News Agency (KUNA) highly praised that Kuwait is becoming the largest donor to the ICRC in the region, particularly to Syria.
He also thanked His Highness the Amir of Kuwait Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, the Kuwaiti government and members of parliament.
Maurer also praised the political support of Kuwait to the committee's work of humanitarian nature, whether in Syria or in the countries of the region in general, especially that the relations between Kuwait and the ICRC were ancient and extend to decades long and witnessed fruitful cooperation between the two sides during the invasion and occupation, and beyond.
He explained that ICRC does not forget the outstanding contribution donated by Kuwait last year to the Committee to fund its operations in Syria worth USD 25 million to implement a number of projects in the field of drinking water supply, public health, basic food items, medications and therapy equipment.
