KUWAIT, Oct 31 (KUNA) -- A senior official of the Convention on
International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) on
Thursday highlighted the need of regional cooperation to activate laws for
protecting wildlife in west Asia.
Speaking to KUNA following "the Workshop on establishment of CITES
enforcement network for West Asia," chief of CITES Governing Bodies and
Meeting Services Jonathan Barzdo said countries of the region need scale up
the combat against trade in any of the endangered species.
The workshop reached an agreement on a range of measures meant to
strengthen regional cooperation in this regard, he pointed out.
Barzdo voiced regret that environment protection laws are breached in
almost all parts of the world.
He added that the recommendations of the workshop will be presented to the
concerned authorities and organizations in the region and beyond with a view
to enforcing them.
On her part, chairperson of the organizing committee Mona Hussein said the
participants in the workshop adopted a network for combating crimes against
wildlife in west Asia, including the import or export of endangered fauna and
flora.
She affirmed that the two-day event is a complete success.
The workshop was organized by Kuwait' Environment Public Authority (EPA) in
collaboration with CITES. (end)
