Police operation kills 2 suspected militants in S. Pakistan

ISLAMABAD, Sept 3 (KUNA) -- At least two suspected militants were killed by police during an operation against militants in southern Pakistani city of Karachi on Tuesday, said police.
According to police, two suspected militants were killed during a search operation by police in an alleged police encounter near Peerabad area of Korangi Town in Karachi city.
A senior police official, SP Chaudhry Asad told that the militants opened fire on the police and two of them were killed on the spot in retaliation, while three of their accomplices managed to escape from the scene.
The firing of the militants injured a policeman and police recovered hand grenades and other weapons from the militants. The dead bodies were shifted to the nearby hospital for postmortem. Earlier on Monday, Police arrested over 100 suspects allegedly involved in street crimes, robberies, drug business and other crimes during raids in different parts of Karachi.
According to police, around 70 suspects were arrested from Landhi, and Korangi areas where nine people were rounded up in Zaman Town and Chakra Goth, five in Awami Colony, two in Malir City and six in Saudabad area recovering drugs and heavy amount of cash from their possession.
The arrested people include around 10 Afghan nationals who were held during a raid in Soldier Bazar area.
Moreover, the Prime Minister of Pakistan has reached Karachi to overview the ground realities as the law and order situation of the city was worsening.
A political party Muttahida Qaumi Movement's (MQM) Chief Altaf Hussain demanded the government to handover the administration of Karachi to Pakistan Army due to continuous violence in the city. However, the opposition of the military operation in Karachi by all the major political parties including ruling Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz has ruled out the possibility of military involvement but called for a targeted operation in the city to control violence.
The Prime MInister's secratariat had said that Sharif is likely to give approval of a joint grand targeted operation during the meeting of the federal cabinet to finally decide regarding steps for peace in the port city.
