Catalonian parliament approves ''burqa'' ban bill

MADRID, July 18 (KUNA) -- The parliament of Spain's northeastern Catalonia has approved a suggestion urging the Catalonian government to consider a possible ban on the wearing of 'burqa' (face veil) at public places.
The suggestion, which was submitted by the United Left Party, aims to ensure public security and safety and to safeguard criteria of coexistence, Spain's Europa Press reported on Thursday.
The overture was backed by the ruling People's Party, Convergence and Union Party, and Party of Citizenry, while the Republic Left abstained, it added.
The bill calls for barring people from covering their faces in streets and public places, including hospitals, restaurants, malls, governmental facilities and schools. (end) hnd.mt KUNA 190104 Jul 13NNNN
