UNITED NATIONS, May 30 (KUNA) -- Yukia Amano, the Director General of the
International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), reported to the Security Council
Iran's non compliance with UN obligations and lack of cooperation to make sure
Teheran's disputed nuclear programme does not have a military dimension.
"Since 2002, the Agency has become increasingly concerned about the
possible existence in Iran of undisclosed nuclear related activities involving
military related organizations, including activities related to the
development of a nuclear payload for a missile," Amano said in a report to the
Council released today.
"As Iran is not providing the necessary cooperation, (...) the Agency is
unable to provide credible assurance about the absence of undeclared nuclear
material and activities in Iran, and therefore to conclude that all nuclear
material in Iran is in peaceful activities," he added.
He noted that despite the intensified dialogue between the Agency and Iran
since January 2012 in ten rounds of talks, "it has not been possible to reach
agreement," and "given the nature and extent of credible information available
to the Agency about possible military dimensions to Iran's nuclear programme,
the Agency considers it essential and urgent for Iran to engage with it on the
substance of the Agency's concerns."
"Unless Iran addresses the Agency's requirement to conduct effective
verification, it will not be possible for the Agency to resolve outstanding
issues, including those relating to possible military dimensions to Iran's
nuclear programme," Amano concluded in his report to the Council.
He reiterated his request that Iran, "without further delay, provide
substantive answers to the Agency's detailed questions" and provide access to
the suspected locations where Iran is believed to enrich uranium in defiance
of Security Council resolutions.
The Council imposed four rounds of sanctions on Iran for refusing to halt
uranium enrichment activities. While the West fears Iran is developing a
nuclear weapon, Iran insists its activities in the domain are purely peaceful,
but refuses to allow the Agency's expert to verify it.
The Agency reports to the Council regularly on its activities regarding the
Iranian file, but the Council remains deadlocked because of Russia's support
to Iran and their strong economic ties. (end)
